Loch Ard Cemetery is a small historic burial ground above Loch Ard Gorge, beside the wider gorge precinct. It is a worthwhile short stop if you want the human story behind the 1878 wreck; the cemetery adds memorial and history, not another lookout.

What the memorial remembersFour people recovered from the wreck were buried here.

Four people recovered from the wreck were buried here. The memorial says their coffins were made from timber washed into the gorge, and that an early cross made from the ship's spars was later replaced by headstones. The cemetery was gazetted as five acres in 1889.

Walk it with the gorgeThe cemetery sits near the gorge parking area and is linked by the Loch Ard Wreck route, a 1.

The cemetery sits near the gorge parking area and is linked by the Loch Ard Wreck route, a 1.4 km walk over bitumen and crushed rock with slight inclines; the path narrows in places near the cemetery. It continues toward Muttonbird Island lookout, so you can put the graves into the wider story of the coast. There are no toilets in the gorge precinct, so plan that stop before setting out.
