More about The Twelve Apostles

The coast's signature lookoutThe Twelve Apostles are limestone sea stacks just offshore in Port Campbell National Park.

The Twelve Apostles are limestone sea stacks just offshore in Port Campbell National Park. The main platforms frame the towers with surf, beach and a long line of cliffs. Seven stacks are visible from the main platform; the famous name isn't a headcount. This is the Great Ocean Road stop I'd protect if you have time for only one big coastal lookout.

Get to the platformsTurn off the Great Ocean Road at Booringa Road, about 7 km east of Port Campbell.

Turn off the Great Ocean Road at Booringa Road, about 7 km east of Port Campbell. From the arrival area, a pedestrian underpass passes beneath the highway, then a boardwalk leads to the viewing platforms. It's a short, exposed walk with little shade, so sun protection and water matter on a clear day.

Coach groups and crowded platforms are part of the experience here, and busy periods can mean waiting for space at the rail. Clear winter visits may be quieter, but don't count on an empty viewpoint. The platforms give you the classic stack-and-surf composition; at sunset, low light can turn the pale yellow limestone orange-red.

How the stacks formedWaves and wind wore caves into the limestone cliffs.

Waves and wind wore caves into the limestone cliffs. The caves grew into arches, then the arches collapsed and left isolated stacks. Erosion is still reshaping this coast. The limestone formed roughly 10–20 million years ago, and the tallest stack rises about 45 m above the water.

Older records used names such as Sow and Pigs and Pinnacles for this stretch of coast; Twelve Apostles took hold in the 1890s. The count depends on which formations and viewpoint you include, and sources differ on the historic totals and collapse sequence. The safest number for this visit is the seven stacks visible from today's main platform.
