Overview
Lower Kalimna Falls is a serene, fern-draped waterfall with a natural rock recess that lets you slip behind the curtain of water. It’s not the tallest in the region, but the mossy amphitheatre and still pool make it one of the most atmospheric spots near Lorne.
The Walk
The track follows Sheoak Creek from Sheoak Picnic Area and is mostly gentle and sheltered. Expect a return hike in the 5.6–6.5 km ballpark (about 1.5–2.5 hours), depending on pace and conditions. After wet weather, the path can be slick and muddy; fallen branches or the odd downed tree aren’t unusual. The access road to the picnic area is unsealed but generally fine for 2WD in normal conditions.
What You’ll See
You’ll wander under tall eucalypts with a lush understory of tree ferns and wattles. Keep an eye out for fungi on decaying logs and listen for the chorus of birds up in the canopy. At the falls, water veils over an undercut ledge into a wide, shallow pool—perfect for photos from the cave-like nook behind the flow. Quiet walkers occasionally spot wallabies along the way.
History
This route borrows corridors from the old timber tramways that once hauled logs to Lorne’s pier (1890s–1920s). Look for cuttings, a sturdy bridge, and interpretive markers that sketch the area’s logging past—and the few giant trees that escaped the saw.

From the same trailhead you can add Henderson and Won Wondah Falls as a shorter separate outing, or continue beyond the fork to Upper Kalimna Falls when that track is open. Phantom Falls is another local favorite if you’re collecting cascades.
Facilities
There are toilets, picnic tables, and a shelter at Sheoak Picnic Area (the trailhead). There are no facilities at the waterfall itself.
Best Time to Visit
Winter into early spring (June–September) usually brings the best flow. Go early to have the grotto to yourself; after heavy rain the scene is dramatic—but expect more mud and slower going. Track openings can change after storms, so confirm current conditions before combining routes.

- 01Start from Sheoak Picnic Area off Allenvale Rd—don’t confuse it with the separate Sheoak Falls carpark on the highway.
- 02Use the toilets at the picnic area; there are none at the falls.

- 04Go early for solitude and the best chance to have the cave-like recess to yourself.
