Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

Maits Rest Rainforest Walk is a compact boardwalk loop through a cool-temperate rainforest gully in Great Otway National Park, about 15 minutes west of Apollo Bay. It is an easy way to step off the Great Ocean Road and get beneath the tree canopy without committing to a long hike. Allow about 30 minutes for the 800 m circuit. This is a good leg-stretch for anyone curious about the Otways' wetter forests; if you want a long or rugged walk, save your time for one of the park's larger tracks.

The gentle route runs through fern gardens and among giant rainforest trees. Look for Myrtle Beech and Mountain Ash rising above the tree ferns, then drop your eyes to mossy logs, roots and the small streams along the way. The boardwalk makes this a close-up forest walk rather than a climb to a big viewpoint, so the details are the payoff: fern fronds layered overhead, bark and moss at arm's length, and the change in light as the path passes under thicker cover.

This gully has been protected since the early 1900s. Some of the forest's plant lineages are Gondwanan remnants, reaching back to the time when Australia was joined to other southern continents around 100 million years ago. You do not need to know the botany to enjoy the contrast: the walk moves through a living pocket of rainforest just off a busy coastal road.

The very large trees and tree ferns are easy to spot; the less obvious residents take more patience. The rare Otway Black Snail is one to watch for beside the track. Glow worms are also a possible after-dark sighting, but visitors do not reliably see them, so treat them as a bonus rather than the reason for the stop.

The route was refurbished with a new boardwalk, bridges and a lookout to better protect the site. That infrastructure gives the walk a more developed feel than a dirt track, but it also keeps visitors moving through the gully without spreading across its damp forest floor. Stay on the boardwalk and give yourself time to pause where the forest opens around a bridge or the lookout.

The entrance is beside the Great Ocean Road, west of Apollo Bay, with a small car park serving the walk. Tour buses often stop here, and visitors report that the parking area can fill, so a quieter time is a better bet if you do not want to risk passing it by. There are no toilets reported at the stop; use facilities in Apollo Bay before heading west.
