Aire River East Campground

Overview

Tucked beside the heritage‑listed Aire River, this small, grassy campground feels wonderfully away‑from‑it‑all. When it’s open, it’s a mellow base for paddling on calm estuary water and spotting wildlife in the gums overhead. As of November 27, 2025, it’s temporarily closed through December 8, 2025 due to wet and muddy conditions—plan accordingly.

Campsites & Facilities

There are 20 unpowered, grassy sites, each for up to six people. The front handful (sites 1–4) suit small tents, while sites 10–20 can handle larger rigs and caravans. Facilities are basic: drop toilets are provided, but there’s no supplied drinking water—bring plenty. Campfires are off the table (no solid‑fuel fires) and generators aren’t permitted, so think quiet evenings and gas/fuel‑stove cooking.

Things to Do

The river is the headline act. Launch a kayak or SUP near the bridge and drift the peaceful estuary, or cast a line. If you’re surf‑savvy, Glenaire Beach is about a 25‑minute walk away and can be punchy. Sections of the Great Ocean Walk pass nearby, so you can mix river time with coastal hiking.

Wildlife

Expect company: koalas, kookaburras and possums are regularly seen (and heard). Along nearby tracks, digging by echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots can create ankle‑grabbing holes—watch your footing at dawn and dusk and give wildlife space.

Access & Road Notes

Reaching Aire River East involves unsealed roads near Cape Otway; approaching via Hordern Vale Road is typically the easier option. Mobile coverage is spotty, so don’t rely on it.

Rules & Safety

No pets, no fires, no generators. On Total Fire Ban days, gas cookers may be used, but campfires remain prohibited. Rough surf and submerged obstacles exist at nearby beaches—stick within your limits. Stay on formed tracks and carry a torch if you’re walking at low light.

Booking & Current Status

Bookings and payment are required year‑round when the campground is open. Note the current temporary closure through December 8, 2025; Aire River West has partial site closures over the same period.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for dry spells and weekdays for a quieter stay. Sunrise and late afternoon bring soft light on the river and the best wildlife activity. Avoid periods after heavy rain, when conditions can trigger closures.
