Wildlife Wonders: A Guided Walk or Café Stop

Overview

About Wildlife Wonders

Why stop

  • Free-ranging wildlife, coastal scenery and thoughtful conservation interpretation.

Heads up

  • Sightings vary; some animals may be distant or high in the trees.
Wildlife Wonders is a protected native-wildlife sanctuary on the Great Ocean Road, about 5 km south of Apollo Bay. It is in the wider Otways visitor region, outside Great Otway National Park's boundary. I'd add it if you want a guided wildlife encounter and a better sense of how conservation work happens on the ground.

Sanctuary access is by guided tour. The standard Walk with Wildlife covers 1.4 km and takes about 75 minutes; leave around two hours for the full visit. Guides lend binoculars and audio headsets. Book ahead, especially in the busier warmer months. Dawn or dusk can improve your chances of seeing animals active, but they roam freely and every walk is different.

The route moves through tree-fern gullies, eucalypt woodland and grassy clearings, with glimpses of the ocean beyond the coastal scrub. It starts and finishes at the Visitor Centre, with the Forest Room near the beginning and the Research Base around the midpoint. There are boardwalk, compacted ground and gravel sections.

Look up and give it timeKoalas can be high in the eucalypts; eastern grey kangaroos use the grassland.

Koalas can be high in the eucalypts; eastern grey kangaroos use the grassland. Visitors also report emus, wallabies and pademelons. Don't count on a particular animal or a close view: the no-cage habitat lets animals move around, so some tours see more than others and a koala may be a long way up a tree.

Turn off at the Wildlife Wonders sign just south of Apollo Bay. The single-level Visitor Centre and the tour route are step-free; the path has gentle gradients and is considered suitable for most sturdy wheelchairs, sometimes with help. Two accessible parking bays are by the main car park. Dogs can use the outdoor cafe courtyard, but not the sanctuary walk.

Emu Cafe is a separate stopThe cafe welcomes walk-ins even if you have not booked a tour.

The cafe welcomes walk-ins even if you have not booked a tour. It serves seasonal breakfast and lunch, plus coffee and locally made sweets. The house blend, The Wildside, is roasted in Apollo Bay. Indoor seats look across the sanctuary, and emus sometimes wander into that view; the courtyard is dog-friendly.

The Conservation Ecology Centre established Wildlife Wonders in 2019 as a social enterprise to support its research and conservation work in the Otways. A predator-proof boundary keeps introduced foxes and cats out while native animals range through the habitat. The centre's wider work includes threatened species such as the long-nosed potoroo and Otways black snail; these are part of the conservation story, not promised tour sightings.
