Piñon Flats Campground

Piñon Flats is the park’s in-park campground, tucked among piñon pines and sagebrush beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Its 88 individual sites are split between two loops, with three group tent sites as well. It’s a practical base for exploring the dunes, about a mile north of the visitor center. Campers also report a foot route from camp toward the sand.

Many sites look toward the dunes or mountains, but shade, privacy, level ground and the walk to a restroom vary from one site to another. Check the reservation page’s photos and dimensions before booking, especially if you’re bringing a larger vehicle: the older campground layout has small and uneven driveways, and published vehicle-length guidance differs. Individual sites allow up to two vehicles only when the actual site fits them.

All three loops have flush toilets, sinks, dishwashing sinks and potable water. Each individual campsite has a picnic table, fire grate and bear-resistant food locker. There are no campground showers or utility hookups; seasonal rinse showers are at the separate Dunes Parking Lot. The store between Loops 1 and 2 carries drinks, snacks, limited camping foods, ice and firewood, but there isn’t a full restaurant here.

Piñon Flats was built during the National Park Service’s Mission 66-era development of the park, alongside the visitor center, picnic area and comfort stations. Its older site layout is part of the experience, but it also explains why a modern RV may not fit every driveway. Use the listed dimensions for the site you’re booking rather than relying on a campground-wide maximum.
