Wellington Homestead is the remnant of a Wellington family cabin at the base of the mountains north of the visitor center. It’s a small history stop, not a restored house or museum; the remains are modest, but they put a human scale on this dune-edge landscape. I’d make time for it if you’re already walking nearby and want a glimpse of life at the edge of the dunes.

The cabin can be seen from Wellington Ditch Trail, a separate route built along the ditch the family used to divert water to their cabin. The remains are also described as north of the visitor center. A direct approach isn’t clear, so use the view from the trail or nearby and don’t assume the ruins are open to enter.

The family’s 1920s effort meant isolated winters with subzero cold and blizzards, then hot sand and mosquitoes in summer. Drought and a short growing season made farming difficult, with grizzly bears and mountain lions among the wildlife threats. The Wellingtons rode horses on the dunes, and Jack Williams later recalled climbing a large dune with Eddie Wellington and sliding back down.
