More about Ben Morton Overlook

A view between ridgesBen Morton Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on U.S.

Ben Morton Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on U.S. 441, the Newfound Gap Road, on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. About 0.8 mile north of Newfound Gap, its roughly 4,826-foot perch looks west across Walker Camp Prong valley, where forested ridges fold toward a narrow horizon. The view feels framed rather than panoramic, making this a worthwhile short stop while crossing the park.

Stay for the sunsetThe overlook is known for layered sunset views.

The overlook is known for layered sunset views. At certain times of year, including May, the sun can drop between the peaks. The small pullout can fill as sunset approaches, especially on busy weekends, so arrive early if you want to watch the light. Fog and cloud can soften the ridges, and the sun alignment is not a year-round guarantee. For a photo, frame the narrowing valley between its ridges; the sun reaches the gap only seasonally.

Ben Morton (1875–1952) was a Knoxville grocer, mayor, and civic leader who advocated for the park and Newfound Gap Road, partly for the region’s economy. The road was completed in 1932, making the crossing between Gatlinburg and Cherokee much easier. It was a contested project: in 1935, Interior Secretary Harold Ickes criticized the scars a scenic road could cut into the mountains. The overlook connects today’s view with the story of how cars came to cross this high ridge.

Keep it a short stopThis is a small parking pullout beside the highway.

This is a small parking pullout beside the highway. No public restroom, drinking water, or food service was confirmed at this specific spot, so plan those needs at another stop along the drive. Newfound Gap is a separate stop to the south, with its own parking area and Appalachian Trail access; don’t confuse the two when planning.
