Swinging Bridge Quiet Walkway is a wooded out-and-back on Shot Beech Ridge, reached from a pull-off on Newfound Gap Road (US 441). The mapped path runs about 0.48 mile one way, so the complete walk back to the overlook is about 0.97 mile. Allow 30 to 45 minutes. The path drops roughly 250 feet toward its far end, so the return is the uphill half. Choose it as a brief forest walk, not a destination hike; the broader valley view is at the parking overlook.

The natural-surface path leaves the road and enters rhododendron and red spruce, which quickly screen the traffic. The mapped half-mile is the named walkway. Shot Beech Ridge continues beyond it, but that extension gets brushier and eventually drops steeply toward Deep Creek; turn around at the walkway’s end rather than treating it as part of this short route.

A name and a small forest storyThere is no swinging bridge on the walkway.

There is no swinging bridge on the walkway. The sign at the overlook, “Spared the Saw,” describes how logging and farm clearing removed much of the park’s old-growth forest in the early twentieth century. Large oaks still dot the ridge, and spring flowers reported along the path include thyme-leaved bluets, violets, and painted trillium. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. A parking tag is required for a stop longer than 15 minutes, and US 441 can close in hazardous weather.
