Parking

The southern end is a remote junction near Sam’s Gap; no designated parking at that exact access was verified. From Abrams Creek Campground, the northern end requires about 2.7 miles on Rabbit Creek Trail. Arrange transport or a connected route before setting out; the campground operates seasonally.

Safety

The route requires an unbridged crossing of Abrams Creek near its Abrams Creek end. High water after heavy rain can make it unsafe. This is a remote 9.4-mile through-hike; confirm current trail and road access and plan the endpoint logistics.

Hiking Hannah Mountain Trail

The one-way routeHannah Mountain Trail is a 9.4-mile point-to-point walk through backcountry forest.

Hannah Mountain Trail is a 9.4-mile point-to-point walk through backcountry forest. The mapped corridor begins at the Gregory Bald Trail junction near Sam’s Gap and ends at the Little Bottoms and Abrams Falls trail junction. The distance covers Hannah Mountain Trail itself, not the extra Rabbit Creek approach. The NPS track measures 9.39 miles; other trail descriptions round it to 9.5. Allow about five hours of walking, plus the time needed to arrange transport or an approach.

The southern start is a remote trail junction, and a designated parking area there could not be verified. From Abrams Creek Campground, the northern end is reached by about 2.7 miles on Rabbit Creek Trail. This is a through-hike, not a loop, so plan how you will get between the ends. Abrams Creek Campground is seasonal; check current road and trail access before relying on it.

Underfoot and along the wayMuch of the tread is gently graded and cushioned with pine needles.

Much of the tread is gently graded and cushioned with pine needles. The route stays in wooded ridge country, with mountain views appearing through the leaves rather than as long open panoramas. It passes backcountry Campsites 14 and 16.

The Abrams Creek fordNear the Abrams Creek end, the route crosses the creek without a bridge.

Near the Abrams Creek end, the route crosses the creek without a bridge. Water can make the ford unsafe after heavy rain; do not attempt it when the flow is high. This is the hike’s main safety decision.

Remains of the old stock routeHannah Mountain follows an old cattle route.

Hannah Mountain follows an old cattle route. Collapsed stone chimneys along the way remain from seasonal herders’ cabins, a small trace of the livestock work once carried on in these mountains.

Campsites 14 and 16 lie along the route; backcountry camping requires an advance reservation and permit, and site status should be checked. Dogs are not allowed on this trail; the park permits pets on only two designated trails. The separate Abrams Creek Campground has flush toilets and drinking water while open, but reaching Hannah Mountain from there adds the Rabbit Creek approach.
