John Glenn Astronomy Park

John Glenn Astronomy Park is a purpose-built public astronomy site within Hocking Hills State Park, with a paved observing plaza, an open observing area and a roll-off-roof observatory. It is the one area of the state park open at night. Come for the sky, but let conditions decide: a clear, moonless night gives you the best chance of seeing faint stars and the Milky Way.

Public programs usually run on Friday and Saturday evenings from early March through Thanksgiving, weather permitting. Volunteers share telescope views and guide the observing. On other clear nights, visitors can look on their own with unaided eyes or bring binoculars, a camera or a personal telescope; the park does not leave its scopes set up for independent use. If you're driving to a scheduled program, reserve a parking pass ahead: the small lot can fill. Check the event and weather information for your date before making a special trip.

For turn-by-turn directions, use 20531 OH-664 Scenic, Logan. The operator warns that its mailing address, 20294 S.R. 664, can misroute visitors. The entrance is about 0.9 mile west of the Old Man's Cave Visitor Center on Route 664.

Dim your headlights as you arrive and switch them off once parked. After a bright light, give your eyes a minute or two to adjust before walking out to the plaza. A bright moon washes out fainter stars, though the Moon itself can still make a good telescope target. A chair or blanket makes a longer session easier on the open paving.

The round feature and narrow upright at the plaza’s center give it a focal point, and the layout is designed so sunlight reaches that special central point at the beginning of each season. That gives the place a daytime astronomy story as well as its night-sky draw: the same plaza lets you watch the Sun’s yearly path mark the calendar. The design also echoes older ways people marked seasonal changes, including Hopewell and Fort Ancient earthworks in Ohio.

Summer nights are short, but the Milky Way’s galactic core comes into view here. The Ring Nebula (M57) in Lyra is another summer telescope target: it is the glowing shell left as a Sun-like star sheds its outer layers, enriched with elements such as oxygen made in stars. Neither target is guaranteed; clouds, moonlight and the program’s available equipment all matter.
