Overview

Waterfowl Lakes Campground sits right off the Icefields Parkway between Upper and Lower Waterfowl Lakes, with Mount Chephren looming behind. It’s a classic Rockies base: big scenery, glassy turquoise water, and easy access to trails—without the crush you’ll feel at the most famous pullouts.

Setting & Facilities

Large, wooded campground managed by Parks Canada with around 110 unserviced sites for tents and RVs up to about 9 m (31 ft).
Facilities include a washroom building with running water and flush toilets, additional vault toilets, potable water taps and greywater sinks, picnic tables at each site, food lockers for walk‑in campers, and picnic/cooking shelters.
Firewood is provided with a fire permit. There are no hookups, no Wi‑Fi or cell service, and no restaurant, store, or gas on site.

Trails & Activities

Lakeside access makes this an easy spot for a quiet paddle or shoreline stroll.
Trailheads nearby include short and moderate options: Upper Waterfowl Lake (easy ~2 km), Cirque Lake (~9 km round‑trip, moderate, ~370 m gain), and the popular Chephren Lake trail just up the road.

Wildlife

Expect classic Rockies wildlife habitat. Black and grizzly bears move through the area (use the provided lockers and standard bear precautions). Around the water, watch for loons and ospreys; you may also see elk, deer, and smaller mammals like marmots.

What to Expect

It’s described as a big, often‑full campground, especially mid‑summer. Sites are generally private in the trees; a few sit near the lake or a small creek. There can be light road noise on the highway‑side loops. Sunsets over the lakes and peaks are a repeat highlight.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset is prime here—the light on Mount Chephren and the turquoise water is hard to beat.
To secure a site, earlier in the day is better during summer. Mosquitoes can surge in early summer, and nights run cool even in July and August.

Practical Tips

This is first‑come, first‑served only.
No services nearby: bring groceries and top up gas before you arrive. The nearest services are at Saskatchewan River Crossing.
No hookups. RV water fill and sani‑dump are available at Rampart Creek Campground down the parkway.
Download maps and plans in advance—there’s typically no cell service here.
Pack insect repellent for summer and warm layers for chilly evenings.
