Access and longer walks

Aroona is reached from Aroona Road in the park’s north. The nearby Aroona Campground is a separate stop on Aroona Creek, with 13 sites and the Heysen Trail passing close by. Published descriptions disagree about the vehicle clearance needed for the access, so check the current park directions before setting out.

The Red Hill Lookout hike is a separate longer outing: 9 km return, with steep sections and a higher view over Aroona Valley. Save it for a day when you want a proper climb.

“You're approaching Aroona Valley, where a spring, station ruins and wide views make a good short heritage stop. The water had long served Adnyamathanha people, but settlers denied them access to it.”

Aroona Valley is a pastoral valley framed by the Heysen and ABC ranges in the northern part of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The visitor stop brings together Aroona Spring, the remains of an old station homestead and a restored pug-and-pine hut. It’s a worthwhile short heritage stop if you want to see how settlement and landscape meet here; expect a few fragments and open country, not an intact homestead or a formal museum.

What the station left behindEuropean settlers established at Aroona for access to water.

European settlers established at Aroona for access to water. After the station became an outstation of Oraparinna in the 1920s, spring water supported gardens and an orchard in this dry country. The homestead has mostly disappeared: its stone foundation and a partial wall sit on a short rise above the former yards. The restored hut gives you a more complete piece of station-era construction.

There’s a harder side to that story, too. Settlers denied Adnyamathanha people access to water, and Adnyamathanha stockmen and housekeepers later became integral to station life. Keep that history in mind as you look over a place where the spring shaped both settlement and its human cost.

A short wander, a wide viewA short climb takes you from the flatter former yards to the homestead remains.

A short climb takes you from the flatter former yards to the homestead remains. The stonework is modest, so the reward is the setting and the fragments rather than preserved rooms. Hans Heysen painted in this landscape; the three pyramidal hills associated with his “Three Sisters of Aroona” studies are part of its story.

For a photo, frame the open paddocks and tree belt with the long ranges behind them. That wider view tells you more about Aroona than a tight crop of one hill.
