“You're approaching Aroona Valley, where a spring, station ruins and wide views make a good short heritage stop. The water had long served Adnyamathanha people, but settlers denied them access to it.”

Hiking Heysen Trail Section 61: Aroona Hut to Parachilna Gorge Trailhead

The last Heysen stageSection 61 is an 18 km (11.

Section 61 is an 18 km (11.2 mi) one-way point-to-point hike from Aroona Hut to the Parachilna Gorge Northern Trailhead, the Heysen Trail’s northern finish. It follows Aroona Valley to the watershed between the Aroona Valley and Parachilna Creek catchments, then continues through the valley between the ABC and Heysen ranges. The appeal is the long, changing walk and the satisfaction of finishing the Heysen Trail at its northern end. Allow about six hours, with five to seven hours a sensible window for pace and stops.

What the walk feels likeMost of the distance is valley walking rather than a sustained climb.

Most of the distance is valley walking rather than a sustained climb. The terrain still makes you pay attention: rocky creekbeds and red-ochre washouts interrupt the easier stretches, and the track shifts from pine woodland to bare, rocky scrub. The ranges and open valley are the view; the route passes abandoned mines before ending at the final stile. The pleasure is in the changing valley and the small trace of mining history along the way. It is described as a pleasant amble, but 18 km is still a full-day commitment.

Make the two ends workTreat it as a through-hike: it does not return to Aroona Hut.
