Dune Ridge Trail

Overview

This is a compact, 0.7-mile lollipop loop that starts by the Kemil Beach access and climbs a sandy ridge for a sweeping look over the Great Marsh before looping back to the stem. Most hikers take 20–30 minutes. The mileage is short, but the sand and one notably steep descent make it feel easy-to-moderate rather than a simple stroll.

What You’ll See

You’ll sample a surprising range of habitats in a tiny package: sun-exposed foredunes with prairie grasses, shady oak woodland with ferny understory, and ridge-top views out over the park’s largest interdunal wetland. The marsh overlook has a bench—linger here for bird activity and the best sense of the landscape’s scale.

Trail Feel and Logistics

Expect mostly sandy tread, with firm patches mixed in. The steep, loose-sand downhill from the ridge is the trickiest bit—take it slow. Benches appear at the main overlook and near the loop junction. The loop begins and ends on the same short connector. The trail itself isn’t wheelchair accessible due to sand and grades; restrooms at the parking area are accessible. Trail maps are posted at the kiosk and available from the visitor center.

Best Time to Hike

Spring and fall are the sweet spots—cooler temps, wildflowers or color, and fewer bugs. Summer can be hot and buggy on the sand, though the oaks give intermittent shade; go early or late for cooler air and flattering light across the marsh. The trail stays open in winter, but snow and ice can make sandy slopes slick.

Tips

Wear shoes that handle sand and short, steep grades. Bring binoculars for the overlook—this is one of the area’s easier places to watch the marsh come alive. Stay on marked paths to protect fragile dune vegetation, and take your time on the sandy descent. If you like quiet, this loop is often calmer than the nearby beach scene.

Worth It?

Yes—think “scenic sampler.” It’s not an all-day, high-drama trek, but for minimal effort you get a great marsh vista, a quick tour of dune and oak habitats, and a peaceful woodland walk. Perfect as a warm-up or a nature break between beach time and exploring elsewhere in the park.
