Cowles Bog Trail

The gravel Cowles Bog Main Lot is on North Mineral Springs Road just before the Dune Acres guardhouse. Walk back along the gravel entrance to the road and cross to the trail. At the loop junction, about a mile in, turn right for the counter-clockwise circuit. At the cutoff junction around mile 1.5, stay right for the beach route. The left-hand cutoff is the shorter option. Follow the trail signs at the beach rather than trying to retrace the same dune path.

The opening stretch stays beside a wetland before reaching the loop. From there the trail moves through black-oak savanna and between interdunal ponds, with packed dirt underfoot and occasional loose sand. It is a useful change of scene every few minutes: open water and wetland plants give way to oak woods, then the land begins to roll toward the lakeshore. The route is not wheelchair accessible.

Near Lake Michigan, the full route climbs over a steep, loose-sand dune, drops to the beach, and follows the shoreline about 0.2 mile west to the signed return path. You climb back over the dune and rejoin the loop. On the way back, stay right at the cutoff junction, take the left branch at the Greenbelt south-lot connector, then turn right at the loop junction to return along the wetland approach to the north lot. The top of the dune is the signature view: include a little beach below the broad lake so the frame shows both the drop and the scale of the water.

There is no potable water along the trail. Carry plenty, bring sun protection and an extra layer for the lakeshore, and pack a lunch if you want to stop at the beach; food service is not listed on the route. A park entrance pass is required. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. The park lists portable toilets at the trailhead lots, but its separate south-lot page describes that restroom as seasonal, so do not count on the south facility being available year-round.

The area's unusual plant diversity earned National Natural Landmark status in 1965. University of Chicago botanist Henry Cowles did early work on plant ecology and succession here; his 1899 study of Lake Michigan dune vegetation helped draw international attention to how these ecosystems develop. The name is established, though the mapped wetland is tagged as a fen rather than a bog. The trail's wetland, ponds, savanna and beach make that ecological story visible as a sequence instead of a single viewpoint.
