Hemingway Buttress is a group of granite climbing faces beside Park Boulevard, northwest of Hidden Valley. The small roadside pull-off has an outdoor climbing exhibit, and established paths head toward the formations. It’s a good stop if you want a close look at the cracks or a short walk among the rocks without planning a full hike. Stay on the paths to limit damage. Bring your own drinking water; no water source is listed at the pull-off. A paved sidewalk reaches the pit toilet.

Why the granite breaks into blocksThese formations began as magma that cooled deep underground.

These formations began as magma that cooled deep underground. Over millions of years, earthquakes cracked the granite; uplift brought it closer to the surface, and groundwater and chemical weathering shaped the blocks before erosion exposed them as the climate grew drier.

A climbing area with a long historyJoshua Tree’s formations have drawn climbers since the 1940s.

Joshua Tree’s formations have drawn climbers since the 1940s. The park has more than 5,000 described routes; at Hemingway, fine-crack climbs and established rappel descents are part of the draw. Named routes here include White Lightning, Poodles Are People Too, and The Importance of Being Ernest.

The outdoor exhibit faces pillars of rock, with mountain views and large Joshua trees around the formations. Follow an established path for a closer look; for a photo, frame the cracked faces against the mountains and include a nearby Joshua tree for scale.
