Best time to visit

The campsite is open year-round, but late spring through early autumn gives the longest light and generally easier camping conditions. Outside school holidays and busy walking weekends, the fields feel more spacious. Wet weather is part of the Lake District experience: the site is prone to flooding after heavy rain, so ask the campsite team where to pitch and bring waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy footwear. Early or late light usually gives the surrounding crags more shape for photographs, while cloud can hide the peaks completely.

More about Great Langdale Campsite

Why stay hereGreat Langdale Campsite is a base for the valley rather than a quick roadside stop.

Great Langdale Campsite is a base for the valley rather than a quick roadside stop. The pitches sit in open meadows beneath the Langdale Pikes, with mountain paths, waterfalls, streams and tarns accessible from the site. It works especially well for walkers and climbers who want to leave the car parked for a few days.

What to expectTent pitches are informal in the camping meadows, while cars stay in a separate car park.

Tent pitches are informal in the camping meadows, while cars stay in a separate car park. Campervans and motorhomes up to 6.5m are accepted, with hardstanding pitches and electric hook-up available; caravans and trailer tents are not. Pods are a simple step up from a tent, with heat, light and sockets, but you still bring camping kit.

Walks begin at the gate. A route to Blea Tarn makes a good shorter outing; the steeper path beside Stickle Ghyll leads to Stickle Tarn, with waterfalls and pools along the way. For a longer day, use the campsite as a launch point for the Langdale Pikes and surrounding fells. Paths are rough and conditions change quickly, so this is mountain country, not an all-weather stroll.

Facilities and practicalitiesThere are toilets and free showers, including accessible facilities, plus washing-up areas,…

There are toilets and free showers, including accessible facilities, plus washing-up areas, laundry and drying rooms. Reception's small shop sells basic food, maps, toiletries and camping essentials; it also serves hot drinks, pastries and breakfast baguettes. A play area, climbing wall and shared EV charging point are useful extras. Drinking water is available on site, and dogs are welcome on leads because livestock grazes in the valley.

There is no Wi-Fi and no mobile phone signal at the campsite. Download maps and weather information before arriving, and bring a torch because the site is very dark at night. The nearest pub is a short walk away, with other pubs and village facilities farther down the valley. Cars are kept away from the tent fields, so allow for a short carry from the car park.
