Scafell Pike from Lake Head

Overview

About Scafell

Why stop

  • Dramatic crags and wide views toward Wastwater and the coast

Heads up

  • Long, strenuous approaches with loose rock and scrambling
Scafell is the second-highest mountain in England, rising to 964 metres south of Mickledore. It is not Scafell Pike: the two summits sit close together in the same dramatic massif, but Scafell feels wilder and more rugged, with the sheer faces of Scafell Crag above Wasdale and broad views toward Wastwater, the western fells, the coast, and upper Eskdale.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Aim for a clear, settled day from late spring through early autumn, ideally midweek and early enough to allow plenty of daylight. The summit is exposed, wind is often strong, and cloud can erase the views or make the descent hard to follow even when the valleys look calm. Winter snow and ice turn the rocky approaches into mountaineering terrain.

For photography, early or late light brings out the crags and gives Wastwater more shape. Bring warm layers, waterproofs, sturdy boots, food, and plenty of water. There are no visitor facilities at the summit, and mobile coverage should not be relied on.

“You’re coming up on Lake Head, the starting point for the direct walk up Scafell Pike. At 978 metres, it’s England’s highest mountain, with views across Wast Water and the surrounding fells when the cloud clears.”

More about Scafell

How to reach itThe usual walking approaches begin from Wasdale Head or Eskdale.

The usual walking approaches begin from Wasdale Head or Eskdale. From Wasdale, routes commonly use the Brackenclose area and reach Scafell via Foxes Tarn, or take the more demanding ground around Mickledore. From Eskdale, the route through the upper Esk and Cam Spout is longer and still involves steep, rough terrain. Plan this as a full mountain day, with a map, compass, and a route suitable for your group.

Do not treat the direct link between Scafell Pike and Scafell as a simple ridge walk. Broad Stand is a serious rock-climbing obstacle, and Lord’s Rake is loose, exposed, and not a sensible choice for ordinary walkers. The Foxes Tarn route avoids the direct crags but includes a steep rocky gully and scrambling.

Why stopThe summit is a short rocky ridge with a large cairn.

The summit is a short rocky ridge with a large cairn. The approach is part of the experience: high ground is mostly bare stone and scree, while the eastern side drops into craggy gullies and the upper Esk. The Borrowdale Volcanics that shape the massif give the mountain its dark, broken rock scenery.
