Overview

About Scafell Pike via Hollow Stones from Wasdale

This is a 5.6-mile (9.0 km) out-and-back from Lake Head car park to the 978 m summit of Scafell Pike and back along the same physical corridor. Allow about five hours for the complete round trip, including pauses and route-finding. This is the direct Wasdale route via Hollow Stones, distinct from the longer Corridor Route and the Mickledore approach.

Why go

  • England’s highest summit with wide Wast Water views
  • The most direct Wasdale ascent
  • A clear sense of progression from valley path to summit boulders

Heads up

  • Steep, relentless climbing on loose rock
  • Lingmell Gill can be hazardous after rain
  • Limited parking and a busy popular route

Parking

Use Lake Head National Trust car park beside the Wasdale campsite, CA20 1EX, grid reference NY183075. The trail leaves from the back of the car park. Spaces are limited, and the approach road through the valley is narrow, so do not treat the village green or roadside as overflow parking.

Best time to go

A clear, settled day gives the route its payoff, while an early start usually means cooler temperatures, softer light on Wast Water, and less pressure on the popular path. Fine weekends can be busy. The crossing of Lingmell Gill can become difficult or unsafe after heavy rain, and a crossing that works on the way up may not be viable on the return. Herdwick sheep and grazing cattle are common lower down. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a short lead, and the steep, rocky terrain suits only dogs used to long fell walks. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Safety

Lingmell Gill may be difficult or unsafe to cross when high. Above Hollow Stones, loose boulders, scree, exposure to severe mountain weather, and confusing cairns demand confident mountain navigation. Carry water because reliable sources are limited higher up. Keep dogs on a short lead around grazing livestock and on the car park approach.

Leave from the back of the car park and follow the path beside Lingmell Gill, with Wast Water opening out behind you. After the river crossing, the route climbs Brown Tongue on a stone-pitched path before roughening through the boulder field at Hollow Stones. Above Lingmell Col, the line becomes a cairned scramble over broken rock to the summit cairn and memorial. Clear weather brings broad views over the Western Fells, Wast Water, and the coast. The rock is part of the Borrowdale volcanic landscape, and the open fell supports fragile montane habitat, so stay on the worn line.

The climb is steep and steady with very little easy ground, then becomes rough, loose, and hands-on in places above Hollow Stones. It is a demanding mountain day rather than a casual “easy” summit walk. The final boulder field and summit plateau are especially tiring on the way down. In mist, cairns can lead toward the wrong valley, so memorize the junction above Lingmell Col on the ascent and carry a map and compass. There is no dependable shade or water higher up, and the summit can be cold, wet, and windy when the valley is mild.
