Before you go

Parking

Use Elterwater Common car park at the trail start, Grid ref. NY 330 050. It is a small lot near Elterwater. Approach from the A593 via Skelwith Bridge and the B5343. Do not obstruct the road, gates, or other access.

Best time to go

A difficult stile marks the entrance to Low Wood, and the rough track around the mill is unsuitable for wheelchair and pushchair users. The route is best for walkers who can manage uneven ground and a few steeper woodland gradients. Spring through early autumn gives the woodland its fullest character; low morning or late-day light is nicest across the common and along the Langdale views. Allow extra time if you want to listen carefully at every stop.

Dogs can accompany the walk, but keep them close around livestock, gates, and the road sections. Elterwater has toilets and places to eat near the start.

Safety

The walk shares roads for part of the loop, including a section beside the A593. The Low Wood entrance has a difficult stile, and the ground around the mill is rough and uneven. Some woodland gradients are steep. Keep dogs close near traffic, livestock, and gates.

“You're nearing Elterwater village, where you can follow the beck to a little lake framed by the Langdale Pikes. For a relaxed stop, I'd choose the lakeshore section of the walk toward Skelwith Bridge.”

Hiking Hearts of Oak Audio Trail

The routeThis is a 2.0-mile (3.

This is a 2.0-mile (3.2 km) circular walk, measured as the complete loop from Elterwater Common car park. It starts across the common, drops toward Elterwater, follows the A593 for a short stretch, then turns into Low Wood. The route threads through woodland to the remains of a water mill, with a short rough section past the mill pond, before climbing back to the road at High Close and returning over the common. The stored distance is the full loop, not just the walking between audio stops.

Allow about 2 hours if you stop for the audio programme and the historical details, although the walking itself is roughly 50 to 60 minutes. The gradients are mostly gentle and the main track is generally good, but the woodland approach to High Close is noticeably steeper. Expect a mix of quiet road, open common, surfaced or firm track, and woodland paths rather than a fully off-road nature trail.

The payoff is the change of scene: open views toward the Langdales from Elterwater Common, then mature woodland and the atmospheric remains of the old mill at Low Wood. This is a history-led walk with scenery around it, not a summit hike. The road sections are the main compromise, but they make the loop easy to follow and give the audio stops a clear story sequence.
