Helvellyn Walks from Glenridding

Overview

About Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge

This is a strenuous 7.7-mile loop from Glenridding, measured as the complete circuit via Red Tarn, Striding Edge, Helvellyn summit, and Swirral Edge. Allow 5 to 6 hours for the route, including normal pauses. The 820 m of ascent and two exposed ridges make it a serious mountain day, not a casual summit walk.

Why go

  • A superb two-ridge circuit with Red Tarn and a high summit
  • Striding Edge delivers genuine scrambling and memorable views

Heads up

  • Exposed hands-on scrambling with steep drops
  • Long, rough mountain day with little margin in poor weather

Parking

Use a Glenridding village car park, preferably Beckside Car Park near OS grid reference NY387169. Walk along Greenside Road toward the old mine buildings, then follow the signed path. Toilets, food, and other facilities are in Glenridding; there are none on the high route.

Safety

This is exposed mountain terrain, not an ordinary hill walk. Striding Edge and Swirral Edge are narrow, rocky ridges with steep drops and hands-on scrambling; the climb off Striding Edge can be loose. Cloud, wind, wet rock, snow, and ice make route-finding and balance substantially harder. Carry navigation equipment and turn around before committing to the ridge if conditions exceed your experience. Keep dogs close and do not take an inexperienced dog onto the edges.

From the village, follow Greenside Road toward the old mine buildings, then climb beside Glenridding Beck to Red Tarn. Cross toward Hole-in-the-Wall and take the rocky crest of Striding Edge. The final climb to the summit is steep and loose in places. From Helvellyn, find the cairned start of Swirral Edge, descend the ridge to the col, and return past Red Tarn on the lower path.

Striding Edge is a narrow, airy Grade 1 scramble with hands-on moves and steep drops on either side. Swirral Edge is usually simpler, but it is still rocky and exposed. Between them, the summit plateau gives wide views over Ullswater, the eastern fells, and the surrounding valleys. Expect a mix of village road, rough mountain path, loose stone, and bare rock, with crowds often bunching up on the ridges in good weather.

Planning the dayStart early for calmer ridges and more time in hand.

Start early for calmer ridges and more time in hand. Clear, settled weather makes the route far easier to follow and gives the walk its value; cloud, strong wind, wet rock, snow, and ice change the risk substantially. Carry food, water, warm layers, waterproofs, and a map and compass. There is no dependable high-level shelter or facility. The safest turnaround is before committing to Striding Edge if conditions or confidence are wrong.

Dogs and alternativesDogs may use the public route, but this is a poor choice for an inexperienced dog.

Dogs may use the public route, but this is a poor choice for an inexperienced dog. The rocky ridges and steep drops are difficult for many animals, and a lead is important around livestock and other walkers. For a less exposed way to the summit, the approach from Swirls or Wythburn is a different hike that avoids both edges.
