Lake George Battlefield Park

This seasonal historic park at the southern end of Lake George preserves the 1755 battlefield and a long stretch of military history. Expect open lawns, wooded monument settings, fort ruins and interpretive panels rather than a reconstructed fort. I’d plan a relaxed walk to read the markers and look for the memorials; it also works well as a picnic stop.

The grounds operate as a seasonal day-use area. Picnic tables and grills are scattered through the park, with two rentable pavilions. A separate seasonal visitor center has artifacts and exhibits, so check its calendar before counting on the indoor displays. Bring lunch or plan to eat in Lake George village, where dining and supplies are available. State rules prohibit pets at DEC day-use areas.

The Battle of Lake George was fought here in 1755, during the French and Indian War. The grounds later served as a major military camp through 1763. After Fort William Henry was destroyed, the British began Fort George on higher ground in 1759. They never finished it; the park preserves its ruins and traces of other buildings and fortifications.

A memorial marks the road associated with Henry Knox’s 1775–76 artillery expedition. He hauled about 60 tons of cannon from Fort Ticonderoga toward Boston. Read the marker with the long open grounds in view and it’s easier to picture the scale of a military camp here.

The site later held a Continental Army hospital and supply base. A smallpox hospital operated here in 1776. In May 2026, the remains of 44 people who died at the hospital, including Continental soldiers and associated personnel, were reinterred in the park. The burial story gives this open landscape a more personal connection to the Revolution.

The 1903 Johnson and King Hendrick sculpture, the 1921 Mohawk Warrior and a 1939 monument to St. Isaac Jogues mark different chapters and later memories of the region. Jogues first saw the lake in 1646 and called it Lac du Saint Sacrement. The kneeling warrior beside the spring is the strongest close-up subject; for a wider photo, put one of the stone markers in front of the lake.
