From the park highway, this is the larger of two roadside pullouts looking into the steep north end of Little Hot Springs Valley; the smaller pullout is about a mile south. It is a view stop, not an access point for hiking: there is no trail into the valley. The hydrothermal ground lies below along East Sulphur Creek, so bring binoculars if you want to look for distant steam vents.

Read the slopesSeasonal creeks cut gullies between the conifers and open slopes.

Seasonal creeks cut gullies between the conifers and open slopes. In early summer, grass and wildflowers can turn vivid green while snow remains nearby, and black bears may feed on the spring grass. For a photo, keep the opposing ridges in frame to show how sharply the valley drops; early summer adds color to the slopes.

Rain and snowmelt feed a hydrothermal system warmed underground by hot or molten rock beneath Lassen Peak. Steam rises through fractures, while abundant spring snowmelt can cool fumaroles and pools and make mud pots more fluid. Little Hot Springs Valley and Sulphur Works sit in an erosional depression left as hydrothermal alteration weakened parts of old Brokeoff Volcano and erosion carried the rock away.

Plan around the park roadThe overlook is directly off the park highway (Highway 89), with no walk beyond the pullout.

The overlook is directly off the park highway (Highway 89), with no walk beyond the pullout. Snow closes the road in fall, and spring clearing can keep it shut into early summer; the opening date depends on conditions. Check current road status before a spring visit.
