“Some of the whitebark pines high on these mountains started in a bird's food stash. Clark's nutcrackers pull seeds from cones, carry them in a pouch under the tongue, and bury them for winter.”

There are ten canvas cabins in two groups of five. Each sleeps up to eight on stacked cots. Four optional tent sites give groups another way to camp, but tents are not provided.

Each of the two covered, screened pavilions has a cold-water sink, bear locker and propane grill; groups bring their own propane cylinder, food, coolers, ice and cooking gear. There is no electricity. A shared solar-powered shower building and six vault toilets serve the camp, along with two campfire-circle activity areas and ranger-led programs.

From Crags Campground to youth campThe camp grew out of a youth-camping program that has operated in the park since 1996.

The camp grew out of a youth-camping program that has operated in the park since 1996. Volcano Adventure Camp replaced the former Crags Campground: the facilities were completed in 2016 and opened to youth groups the following summer. Its cabins and shared kitchens make an overnight park experience practical for organized groups without turning the site into a general-public campground.
