Bamboo Creek Tin Mine

Overview

About Bamboo Creek Tin Mine

Why stop

  • Original ore-processing machinery
  • Specific early-20th-century mining history

Heads up

  • 4WD-only access
  • Short walk with limited scope
This is a compact historical stop, not a museum. Tin was worked here from around 1906, and mining continued on and off until the site was abandoned in 1955. What is left gives a close look at how a small-scale mining operation of that era actually functioned, from digging the ore to crushing it and moving it out.

Access and the walk

  • Access is by 4WD track only, so plan your vehicle accordingly.
  • From the parking area, a short loop-style walk takes you around the remains. Distances and times are approximate, so treat it as a brief walk rather than a fixed schedule.
  • As with any Top End walking, carrying water and sun protection is sensible.

  • Machinery and processing remains tied to extracting and crushing ore, plus remnants relating to transport.
  • Stone domestic remains, including living quarters, and scattered domestic objects left behind.
  • An explosives magazine, one of the more telling reminders of how the work was done.
  • The setting itself: the mine sits at the base of the Tabletop Range in dry tropical woodland, next to Bamboo Creek.

The attraction is the surviving ruins and machinery, so this suits visitors with an interest in industrial and mining heritage more than those looking for a headline sight. Do not enter the shaft, and treat the old structures as fragile: they are historic remains, not maintained buildings. Because it is a short walk around a small site, it works best as an add-on to a longer day in the park rather than a destination on its own.
