“Near Inverarnan, the old traffic once had hooves. Highland drovers took cattle down the side of Loch Lomond toward markets, and the Drovers Inn served them along the way. A drove could number a hundred animals or more.”

Ardlui Holiday Park is a small accommodation park on the northern tip of Loch Lomond, with caravans, lodges and glamping pods beside the Ardlui Hotel and marina. Choose it as a base for staying by the water and getting out onto the loch, rather than as a standalone sightseeing stop.

Boats and the West Highland WayThe marina is the park's big advantage.

The marina is the park's big advantage. Kayak hire, wakeboarding, waterskiing, wakesurfing and speedboat trips all run from the compound, with sheltered paddling on the north end of the loch and the River Falloch. If you're walking the West Highland Way, the marina ferry crosses to Ardleish on the eastern shore. That makes Ardlui a useful overnight or activity base, but the long-distance route is across the water, not a path leading straight out of the park.

Food and the practical pictureThe hotel is a short walk away for traditional Scottish country cooking, with salmon and…

The hotel is a short walk away for traditional Scottish country cooking, with salmon and venison typical of the menu, plus two bars, a lochside beer garden and a substantial whisky selection. Site facilities include toilets, showers, a launderette and chemical disposal, and dogs are accepted subject to restrictions. You reach the park from the A82, about eight miles north of Tarbert; Ardlui railway station and bus stops are close by. Expect a working holiday compound rather than wilderness camping: visitors love the loch views, while some report close pitches and occasional noise.
