#7 of 47 trails in Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave National Park, KY
A short rocky circuit links a cave, bluff ridge, and spring.
Overview
This is a 1.4-mile loop from the Historic Entrance, joining the Dixon Cave route, Green River Bluffs and River Styx Spring. The connected line measures 1.38 miles and gains about 300 feet; allow around 1½ hours if you stop at the cave and spring. It packs a cave entrance, bluff ridge and cave-fed spring into one short walk. Some published route listings give 1.7 miles. The reason for that difference isn't settled; different connector choices or GPS recording may account for it. Follow the junctions and your map rather than relying on mileage alone.

Trail guide
Start at Historic Entrance and follow the Dixon Cave paths toward the cave platform. Continue on the Green River Bluffs connection instead of turning back the way you came; the mapped circuit then descends toward the spring and returns by River Styx Spring Trail. This isn't the entire Green River Bluffs outing from the Picnic Area, and it isn't the longer network walk that follows other visitor-center trails. A few junctions are hard to read from the approach, so keep the park trail map handy and check the named connections as you go.
The raised platform gives you a view of Dixon Cave's gated entrance; this is an outside look, not a cave passage or cave tour. The path climbs over gravel, rock and roots, with steps near the cave. Slow down here and look at the layers: the ridge carries Big Clifty Sandstone above Girkin Limestone, and fossils show in exposed limestone along the trail. Limestone dissolves in groundwater and forms cave passages, while the sandstone above caps the ridge. You can see a small piece of the park's geology without going underground.
From the cave area, the trail crosses wooded rises on rocky tread before dropping toward the river. Loose stone and a steep switchback make this the roughest stretch; expect to take your time on the descent. A footbridge and smoother gravel appear lower down. The overlook looks across a bend in the Green River and wooded hills, though vegetation can screen part of the view. When an opening clears the river, include a little trail or foreground branch in your photo so the valley doesn't flatten into a green wall.
The spring path follows the lower river corridor back toward Historic Entrance. At River Styx Spring, water from the cave system emerges beside the Green River. Sinkholes south of the park drain into underground passages, and groundwater can travel more than seven miles before surfacing at a spring. That's the neat connection on this walk: the cave, the limestone ridge and the river are parts of one water system, not separate sights.
Use the Visitor Center area parking, then walk to Historic Entrance, the start for this loop. The footing changes from gravel to roots, rock and steps; this isn't a smooth stroll. Leashed pets are allowed on surface trails with a leash no longer than six feet, but pets can't enter caves or park buildings. No trail-side water source was identified, so start with the water you need.
