Overview
Bottomless Pit is a deep chasm inside Mammoth Cave, remembered for the crossing that opened more of the cave to exploration. It makes a strong stop if you want the human story of cave exploration alongside the underground scenery. The current tour itinerary that names the pit is Historic Adventure, a strenuous four-hour outing with about 640 stairs; this isn't a separate surface stop.

Guide
Stephen Bishop, an enslaved African American man, arrived at the cave in 1838 and began guiding as a teenager. He and a visitor crossed the pit, opening many miles of cave passages for further exploration. It is a small point on the tour, but a turning point in the cave's story.
In 1842, Bishop drew a map of explored passages from memory; it was published two years later in Rambles in the Mammoth Cave During the Year 1844. He was also credited with discovering Mammoth Dome and the Ruins of Karnak. The pit matters as a barrier in a much bigger underground landscape he helped reveal.
The modern bridge gives you a view into the shaft. If your guide gives you a moment for a photo, include part of the bridge or rock rim to show the scale of the drop, and keep the flash off.
