Trail guide
The visitor-center version is a 3.2-mile out-and-back linking River Styx Spring to Echo River Springs. It follows the Historic Entrance access to River Styx, crosses the Two Springs ridge connector and includes the Echo Springs loop once before returning over the same connector. Allow about 1¾ hours, with extra time at the viewing platforms. There is a 300-yard steep climb between the spring areas, so expect a real hill rather than a flat nature walk. Mileage varies slightly with the Echo loop start; this total includes the short visitor-center approach.
The path down to River Styx is broad gravel. A short spur leads to the spring platform. From there, Two Springs climbs about 300 yards at an average 18% grade. A boardwalk follows the ridge above the spring, then the trail descends more gently toward River Valley Trail. At the T-junction, signs do not identify the route clearly; check your map and take the branch toward Echo River Springs.
The lower segment follows a paved, almost level loop past Echo River Spring and nearby Accessory Spring, with a platform at each. The pools can be subtle in the wooded setting. At River Styx Spring, the layered limestone ledge and pool make a stronger photo than a close crop of water; include the rock shelves so the seep reads as a spring.
These springs are surface outlets for Mammoth Cave’s underground drainage. Sinkhole water can travel more than seven miles through cave passages before emerging along the Green River. The groundwater supports eyeless cave crayfish, cave fish and shrimp; those animals live underground and are not things to look for on this surface walk.
Park at the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center and follow the Historic Entrance access to the River Styx route. Leashed pets are allowed on surface trails with a leash up to six feet. The route moves from gravel to dirt and boardwalk, with the steep Two Springs climb and a hard-to-read junction as its main tradeoffs.
