Sand Cave Trail

Sand Cave Trail is an accessible out-and-back boardwalk from the park’s eastern entrance to a viewing platform facing Sand Cave. Follow the mapped boardwalk about 0.14 mile, then return the same way for about 0.28 mile total; allow roughly 15 minutes with the wayside exhibits. It is a quick, worthwhile stop if you want to see the place behind a major Mammoth Cave story, but it is not a cave tour, and the entrance can be hard to make out from the platform.

Accessible parking is by the entrance sign on Cave City Road. The boardwalk crosses a wooded hollow, with exhibits explaining the entrapment, and ends at the platform. The National Park Service lists the route as accessible, though a secondary on-site account says the return grade may be difficult for some wheelchair users; bring assistance if that may apply. Stay on the boardwalk: an informal path below the platform descends toward the cave and has reported slick footing, but it is not part of the official route. Leashed pets are allowed on the park’s surface trails; keep them on a leash no longer than six feet.

On January 30, 1925, cave explorer Floyd Collins became trapped when a 27-pound rock pinned his ankle in a narrow passage as he tried to leave Sand Cave. The rescue drew thousands of onlookers and reporters over more than two weeks; Collins had died by the time rescuers reached him. Reporter William “Skeets” Miller interviewed Collins from inside the cave, and his reporting later won a Pulitzer Prize. The story’s national attention helped build support for protecting the area as a national park.
