Sand Cave

Sand Cave is a natural cave entrance on Mammoth Cave National Park’s eastern side, reached by a 0.1-mile accessible interpretive boardwalk on Cave City Road. The cave mouth and the story of Floyd Collins’s 1925 entrapment are the reasons to stop. It is a compact surface visit, not an underground cave tour.

The boardwalk leads to the entrance and wayside exhibits that tell the story. The trailhead is at the park’s eastern entrance on Cave City Road, and accessible parking is available by the entrance sign. At the end, frame the dark opening with its layered rock lip so the cave reads clearly in a photo; the green woodland around it gives the image context.

On January 30, 1925, Collins was exploring Sand Cave when a 27-pound rock trapped his ankle about 60 feet underground. Rescuers worked for more than 17 days; they reached him through a shaft on the eighteenth day, after he had died. The interpretive panels follow the attempted rescue and the attention it drew to this otherwise quiet hollow.

Reporter William “Skeets” Miller made daring trips into the cave to interview Collins, and his reporting later won a Pulitzer Prize. News of the rescue drew thousands of spectators to Cave City and helped put the region’s caves in the national spotlight. Congress authorized Mammoth Cave National Park in 1926; the park was fully established in 1941.
