Playa Espadilla Norte

Playa Espadilla Norte is a long, sandy Pacific beach along the Manuel Antonio gateway, just outside the national park. It’s a good pick for open sand, beachside food and rentals without a park ticket; if you want a quiet cove or reliably calm water, this is a livelier, more exposed choice. The shoreline continues south toward the park, but the ticketed Playa Espadilla Sur is a separate visit.

The usable sand changes with the tide: high water can press the dry beach into a narrow strip, while lower water leaves more room. Surf and currents can run strong, so check conditions before getting in rather than counting on gentle swimming.

There’s often a calmer stretch toward the wooded park edge, though this is still a popular, developed beach. Vendors and music can be part of the busier access area; for a secluded beach day, choose somewhere else.

The shoreline faces west over the Pacific, making sunset a natural time to linger. From the sand, include the palms and wooded headland near the park end to give the ocean view a sense of place; there’s no hike to the photo spot.
