Far View Community Sites is a cluster of six Ancestral Pueblo archaeological sites linked by a 0.75-mile loop through woodland and former farm ground on Chapin Mesa. This is the place to understand the settlement as a community, beyond the cliff dwellings Mesa Verde is famous for. The trail is level and unpaved; walk the full circuit to see how widely homes and activity areas were spread.

The loop links Far View House, Pipe Shrine House, Coyote Village, the dry Far View Reservoir, Megalithic House and Far View Tower. Interpretive signs connect the masonry remains with the surrounding fields. Expect separate low walls and foundations rather than a single enclosed dwelling; stay on the path and give the signs time.

Ancestral Pueblo people lived here from about 800 CE for several centuries. By the mid-1100s, at least 35 villages and farm plots occupied a half-square-mile area. Deep mesa soils, warmer nights and a longer growing season than nearby valleys helped support farming; check dams held runoff and soil on the slopes. Some families remained on the mesa as others moved into canyon alcoves.

Tree-ring dates point to wood cut in the 800s and 900s, while later construction layers show the Far View House location was rebuilt and altered over about 350 years. The remains reflect generations of choices, not a single building project.

The dry, stone-lined Far View Reservoir was built and rebuilt from about 950 to 1200. Crop and water-plant pollen supports a role in collecting seasonal water, while the later inner walls have also prompted theories about ceremonial uses. The evidence does not settle whether its purpose changed over time.

Treat this as a short archaeological walk, not a meal stop: no food service is listed at the loop, so bring water and eat elsewhere. The trailhead has benches, interpretive signs, parking and a vault or composting toilet. Parking is limited, and vehicles over 25 feet are excluded because the turning space is tight. Pets and bicycles are not allowed on the trail. The loop closes to foot and vehicle traffic in winter when snow and mud make it unsafe.
