Geologic Overlook

Geologic Overlook is a roadside geology stop on Mesa Verde’s main park road. A brief uphill walk leads from the pullout to two viewpoints, where you can read the mesa’s rock layers against the broad landscape. It’s a worthwhile leg-stretcher if you want to understand what you’re looking at across the park; the stop itself can be quick.

The NPS points out the Menefee Formation above the Point Lookout Sandstone here. Look for the contrast between the formations, then trace the visible faults and pale scars where slopes have slid. Geology panels help connect those shapes to the area’s long sequence of changing shorelines and land.

About 100 million years ago, a shallow arm of the Western Interior Seaway reached this region. As it advanced and retreated, it left sandstone, shale and other layers. Point Lookout sandstone formed as shallow-water and beach conditions returned; the younger Menefee Formation accumulated across a coastal plain of swamps and slow streams. Its darker shales include thin coal beds and preserve fossil plant traces.

The softer Mancos and Menefee shales weather easily, and landslides have repeatedly reshaped slopes in Mesa Verde. From the overlook, the faults and slide scars are part of the view, not just textbook marks. Farther away, the Sleeping Ute and La Plata Mountains have a different origin: magma pushed rock layers upward into broad domes without erupting through the surface.

Use the right-hand roadside pullout and follow the short uphill path to the two outlooks. A pit toilet is at the trailhead. The published information gives no exact walking distance or accessibility rating, so don’t assume the climb suits every visitor. For a photo, keep the layered escarpment and wooded slope in the foreground with the open plain beyond; that shows the landscape’s structure better than a tight shot of one rock face.
