Mesa Verde National Park, CO
Two Mesa Verde geology viewpoints on a very short uphill walk.
Overview
Geologic Overlook Trail is a 0.21-mile out-and-back from a roadside pull-over to two geology viewpoints and back. It’s a quick stop if you’re curious about Mesa Verde’s rock layers, rather than a hike to build a day around. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the walk, a look at the exhibits and the return.

The lower area has a paved, curbless walkway and exhibits. Keep climbing for a second viewpoint on a steep paved incline. The first stop is level access; don’t assume the whole walk is. The upper viewpoint is a short but real uphill push.
The viewpoints show the Menefee Formation above Point Lookout Sandstone. These rocks preserve a changing coastal landscape: swamps and slow streams left layers of sandstone, shale and coal more than 80 million years ago. It’s a compact geology lesson, with the landscape right in front of you.
