Prater Ridge Trail

Prater Ridge Trail is the full 7.8-mile round trip from Morefield Campground, combining a shared 1.1-mile approach with both loops on the ridge. Allow about four hours; the complete outing is strenuous and has 675 feet of elevation change. If you walk only the North Loop, the round trip from camp is 5.7 miles; choosing only the South Loop makes it 4.6 miles. The 7.8-mile figure is for doing both loops, not the sum of those two separate trips.

The shared approach climbs from the west side of camp for 1.1 miles to the ridge junction. Most of the elevation gain comes early, then the walk spreads out across the mesa. On the full itinerary, return to camp along the same approach after completing both circuits.

Turn right for the longer North Loop, whose 3.6-mile circuit follows the mesa edge high above Montezuma Valley and looks toward the San Juan Mountains. Turn left for the 2.4-mile South Loop, with views into Prater and Morefield Canyons. The loops share a short connector, so walking both makes one long outing with a different canyon view on each side. At a Prater Canyon opening on the South Loop, include the sandstone ledge in the foreground with the pale cliffs beyond to give the canyon depth.

Prater Ridge divides Prater and Morefield Canyons. Prater Canyon was named for an early pioneer family. The North Loop looks across Montezuma Valley; the South Loop turns inward toward the canyon heads before reaching the ridge’s southern end.

The trailhead and auto parking are on the west side of Morefield Campground. Bring water and take breaks: dehydration and altitude sickness are concerns at Mesa Verde, and the climb takes place at high elevation. Stay on trail near unfenced, unstable cliff edges and fragile cryptobiotic soil. Pets and bicycles are prohibited, and the trail is day-use only. Morefield Village is a separate nearby stop for a grocery, fuel, showers and breakfast at Knife Edge Café; services are seasonal.
