Trail guide
Blue Valley Track to Camp Flat is a 5 km out-and-back from Blue Pools car park, 2.5 km each way. DOC allows 2–3 hours one way, so plan 4–6 hours return; the track is graded Advanced. The first 20 minutes follow the Blue Pools Track to the swing bridge over the Makarora River. Cross it and take the Blue Valley branch. Blue Pools is a separate 10-minute return spur, not part of this route.
From the junction, the route climbs above the Blue River, drops through a forested basin of mature tawhai (silver beech), climbs again, sidles a gorge and descends to Camp Flat. The track is narrow and rooty at first, then eases through the beech forest. Steep, uneven footing makes this short distance feel long; give yourself the full time rather than treating it as a quick detour.
Camp Flat is a grassy clearing used as a lunch stop or campsite, about 50 m from the Blue River, with a view toward Mt Stuart (1,860 m). It is a welcome open break in the enclosed valley. For a photo, include the meadow and river below the mountain backdrop. Pack food and water; treated water and toilets are not documented on the route.
The track continues from Camp Flat toward the head of Blue Valley. DOC gives another 13.5 km one way and 6–7 hours, while its introduction rounds the distance to 13 km. The continuation follows poles, passes a semi-active slip and crosses the unbridged Blue River. Do not cross if the river is high or you cannot find a safe crossing. This extension is beyond the mapped 5 km return and needs a separate backcountry plan.
Avalanches can reach this track, usually from May through November. Weather changes quickly and hypothermia is possible even in summer, so carry warm, waterproof layers and suitable footwear. Dogs are not allowed.
