Overview

About Loess Bluff

Loess Bluff sits at Milepost 12.4 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, where a roadside pullout puts a cut bank of ancient dust right beside the road.

Why stop

  • The exposed bluff makes Ice Age geology tangible

Heads up

  • Small, quick stop with little to see beyond the bluff and exhibit
Where the Old Natchez Trace crossed loess, generations of travelers wore the route downward, forming sunken roads in places 20 feet deep. The bluff is the plain explanation for those trenches, and deeply sunken sections of the old road can be walked at Potkopinu, a separate site.

The exposure reveals a deep deposit of windblown topsoil called loess, laid down during the Ice Age. Dust storms sweeping off the western plains dropped this material to a regional depth of 30 to 90 feet, blanketing older sea sands and clays beneath. The loess belt it belongs to runs east of the Mississippi from Baton Rouge into Tennessee.
