Overview

About Roundhill Campsite

Why stop

  • Open space with a pond and free-roaming New Forest animals
  • Direct access to forest walking and cycling

Heads up

  • Large family-oriented site can be noisy at peak times
  • Soft, muddy ground after heavy rain
This is one of the larger New Forest sites, set between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu on a spread of open grass with wooded pockets around the edges. The scale is the point. There is room to spread out, pick your own spot on the grass, and camp with a wide sky overhead rather than a hedge on every side. A pond sits within the site, and the mix of water, trees and open ground brings the forest right up to your tent door.

Best time to go

Arriving early in the day or visiting midweek makes it far easier to choose a quieter pitch. High summer and peak periods can be considerably busier, so allow time to walk the ground and settle on a spot rather than taking the first gap you see.

“That harsh screech on a woodland walk may be a jay. It's a shy crow, but the blue bars on its wings and white rump can give it away as it crosses a clearing. In autumn, watch for one carrying an acorn away from an oak.”

More about Roundhill Campsite

What the stay feels likePonies, cattle and donkeys roam freely, grazing between the pitches and moving through the site…

Ponies, cattle and donkeys roam freely, grazing between the pitches and moving through the site as they please. The setting is peaceful, and campers regularly comment on how spacious the self-selected pitches feel. Walking and cycling routes lead straight off the site into the forest, so you can leave the car parked and set off on foot or by bike from wherever you have pitched.

Practical preparationPitches are grass only and self-selected across the open and lightly wooded areas.

Pitches are grass only and self-selected across the open and lightly wooded areas. Facilities include toilets with a disabled toilet, showers, drinking water, washing-up sinks, chemical disposal and recycling. Dogs are welcome. There is also a rally field for groups. Camping is seasonal, so check availability before travelling. Open fires and barbecues are subject to New Forest restrictions, so plan your cooking around that and follow the guidance in place during your stay.

Sharing the site with animalsThe animals here are free-roaming stock, not tame.

The animals here are free-roaming stock, not tame. Watch them from a distance, do not feed, pet or approach them, and give ponies and donkeys space to pass. Keep all food sealed and out of reach, inside a vehicle or a closed awning rather than left out on a table or in an open tent.

Honest drawbacksIt is a big, family-oriented site, and at busy times parts of it can feel crowded and noisy…

It is a big, family-oriented site, and at busy times parts of it can feel crowded and noisy into the evening. If you want quiet, walk the site before choosing and head for a more wooded corner away from the main routes through. Facilities are generally clean but basic rather than plush. Some areas drain slowly, so after heavy rain expect soft ground and pick a slightly raised pitch if you can.
