This is the high, roadside vantage point for taking in the full span of Sandstone Falls from above. It sits roughly 600 feet over the river and gives you that big-picture look at the New River stepping over its 1,500‑foot‑wide ledge. It’s separate from the riverside boardwalk down on New River Road—think of the overlook as the quick, scenic preview.
What You'll See
Expect a broad panorama of the falls broken by islands, the river gorge below, and Brooks Island—known for bald eagle nesting. Bring binoculars if you like birding; this is a solid spot to scan the sky and treetops.
The Stop Itself
A short gravel path (about a tenth of a mile with a brief descent) leads from the small lot to the viewing area. There are picnic tables, benches, and a simple restroom. Figure on 15–30 minutes for most visits unless you settle in for a picnic or wildlife watching.
How It Fits with the Falls Below
If you want to feel the power up close, the river-level boardwalk at Sandstone Falls is the place for that. From the overlook, it’s a separate drive down the mountain via New River Road. That road is narrow with limited passing, and vehicles over 25 feet aren’t recommended. Budget roughly 25–45 minutes to transition from the overlook to the boardwalk parking, depending on where you’re starting.
Best Time to Visit
Weekends build to a midday crush; late morning through mid‑afternoon is typically busiest. Early mornings are the calmest any day of the week. Fall is especially photogenic from this high angle when the hardwoods light up.
Safety & Practicalities
There’s no trail from here down to the water—this is a view-only stop. If you do head to the river-level area later, remember the water around the falls is swift and hazardous; stay on boardwalks and consider a life jacket if you’re near or on the water.

It’s a quick hop off WV‑20 between Sandstone and Hinton, only a few minutes from the Sandstone Visitor Center. Watch for the signed pull-off on the mountain side of the road.
