Island Loop Trail

This is a quick, easy 0.5-mile loop that circles the largest island below Sandstone Falls. You access it directly from the Sandstone Falls Boardwalk, making it an effortless add-on after you’ve taken in the main waterfall overlooks. If you include walking the boardwalk out and back, expect about a mile total.

The loop winds through a quiet, forested island with frequent peeks at the New River and the broad, roaring apron of Sandstone Falls. You’re walking through a landscape in recovery—fields that were once farmed, grazed, and logged are naturally returning to forest. It’s a peaceful contrast to the main overlooks, and a nice way to trade spray and crowds for birdsong and wildflowers.

Trail Details

The Island Loop itself is hiking-only and easy, with mostly flat, natural tread. Expect some roots, occasional rocks, and muddy, slick spots after rain. The boardwalk you use to reach the loop is the most accessible segment in the area; the loop is a standard dirt path. Wayfinding is straightforward from the boardwalk—look for the signed junction (on park maps it’s labeled as “4”).

Park at the Sandstone Falls Boardwalk parking area; the loop starts and ends from the boardwalk. Recent visitors note restrooms by the parking. Do the boardwalk first for the classic falls views, then take the Island Loop for a calmer stroll. It’s typically not crowded compared to the overlooks, so it’s a good choice if you want a quieter moment with the river.

Best Time to Hike

This walk works year-round. Go after the boardwalk viewing if you’re timing a quick stop. After rain, expect slick, muddy patches on the island; traction footwear helps. Crowds concentrate on the boardwalk overlooks, and the loop tends to stay mellow.

Follow park guidelines: pack out all trash, keep pets leashed, and leave natural and historic objects undisturbed. Use restrooms at the parking area when available; otherwise follow the park’s human-waste rules for undeveloped areas.
