Grandview Main Overlook

Main Overlook is Grandview’s principal viewpoint on the gorge rim, about 1,400 feet above the New River. On a clear day, the river and its watershed stretch roughly seven miles through the gorge, with a broad horseshoe bend wrapped around a forested ridge. Keep it on your short list if you want the park’s defining view without committing to a hike. A short stone path leads from the main parking area; fog can hide the gorge completely.

The active railway follows the river far below, and the town of Quinnimont sits in the view. It is where coal was first shipped out of the gorge in 1873, so the panorama shows how the river, rail line and coal towns fit together. A train sometimes adds a moving detail to the view, but the gorge itself is the reason to stop.

The main overlook shares its parking hub with the seasonal visitor center and picnic facilities. NPS lists flush accessible restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables and a playground there; the center is a separate nearby stop, and its schedule changes by season. The facilities list shows picnic options and water rather than food service, so this works best as a packed-lunch stop. The Grandview area is open year-round; the park does not publish an accessibility rating for the overlook path itself.

If you want a hike after the view, the moderate Grandview Rim Trail runs 1.6 miles one way from Main Overlook to Turkey Spur, or 3.2 miles out and back. Castle Rock Trail starts nearby and is a strenuous option, with fortress-like rock walls and exposed coal seams. Those are separate outings from the quick walk to the overlook.

West Virginia bought 52 acres here in 1939 for a day-use park. Civilian Conservation Corps crews built roads, shelters and a picnic area that NPS says are still in use. Grandview stayed a state park for more than 50 years before transferring to the National Park Service in 1990.

From the established overlook, include a little of the rocky rim at the bottom of your photo. That foreground helps show how far the river drops below you and keeps the horseshoe bend from reading as just another distant hill view.
