Overview
Grandview Main Overlook is the classic, big‑view stop: a lofty perch roughly 1,400 feet above the New River with long sightlines over a dramatic bend and about seven miles of gorge. It’s open year‑round, free to visit, and the payoff comes quickly—just a brief paved stroll from the parking area to the deck.
What You’ll See
Expect an expansive canyon of sandstone and shale cliffs dropping to the ancient New River. On clear days, you can sometimes spot trains threading the gorge and whitewater rafters far below in late spring and summer. Birders like the open sightlines along the rim, and deer are commonly seen in the surrounding woods.
Why the View Is So Good
The New River cut this deep gorge through the Appalachian Plateau over millions of years, carving into tough, quartz‑rich sandstones that hold those sheer walls you’re looking at. It’s one of the oldest river systems on the continent, and Grandview puts that geology on full display.

Photographers prize this spot for sunrise and even stargazing on clear nights. Rhododendron put on a show here—Catawba typically blooms around mid‑May, and great rhododendron follows in July—while fall color lights up the ridges. Do know that autumn dawns can bring dense fog; if it’s socked in, give it time to lift.
Trails & Add‑Ons
From the main area you can hop onto the Grandview Rim Trail for more viewpoints (including North Overlook) and continue toward Turkey Spur, or drive up to Turkey Spur for another perspective. Shorter, rockier loops like Castle Rock and Tunnel Trails add variety if you want a quick leg‑stretcher beyond the deck.
Amenities
You’ll find a large parking area, restrooms near the picnic grounds, picnic shelters/playgrounds, and drinking water nearby. The Grandview Visitor Center is small and typically open seasonally; the overlook itself is accessible year‑round. Dogs are welcome on leash.
Best Time to Visit
For light and fewer people, aim for sunrise or early morning on weekdays. Midday on weekends can be busy. If fog settles in, late morning often brings clearer views. Golden hour is ideal for photography, with soft light raking across the gorge.
