Sandstone Falls Boardwalk

Overview

This short, flat boardwalk delivers big-water drama with almost no effort. Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the New River, spreading roughly 1,500 feet across a series of ledges with drops of about 10–25 feet. The boardwalk is about 0.25 miles one way (≈0.5 miles total), fully accessible, and built with railings and two small bridges to islands and multiple overlooks. It’s an easy win for families, mobility devices, and anyone who wants a front-row seat to serious river power.

Getting There

From Hinton, head to the west end of the WV‑20 bridge and follow River Road (WV 26) about nine miles downstream to the day‑use area. The road narrows to single lane in places—take it slow and be courteous on blind curves. Parking is in a gravel lot next to the trailhead, with vault toilets and picnic tables nearby.

Trail Experience

The boardwalk threads through a unique Appalachian riverside flatrock community—home to rare plants that thrive on thin soils and seasonal flooding—before reaching island overlooks with mist and wide‑angle views of the falls. Please stay on the boardwalk to protect the fragile flora. There’s shore access for fishing from the islands, but if you step off the boards, expect slick rocks and watch your footing near swift current.

Best Time to Go

Plan on mornings or weekdays for breathing room at the overlooks. Summer brings lush greens and high flow after rains; fall adds color in the surrounding floodplain forest. Winter can be quiet and peaceful with far fewer people, though services are minimal year‑round.
