Overview

If you want a simple, toes-in-the-sand river camp, Stone Cliff delivers. It’s a tent-only, walk-in setup tucked beside the New River near historic Thurmond. There are just seven designated sites—five on the sandy beach and two tucked in the woods—so it feels intimate when it’s not peak weekend.

Campsites & Amenities

This is primitive camping, full stop. Park in the lot and carry your gear down steps/paths to the sites. Expect vault toilets in the parking area, trash receptacles (pack out if they’re full), and not much else. No drinking water, no hookups, no electricity. Picnic tables and proper fire rings are hit-or-miss; use existing rings only and follow current fire regulations. Cell service is often nonexistent; plan for no bars.

Officially, it’s tent-only and first-come, first-served with no fees. Quiet hours run 10 pm–6 am, there’s a 14-days-in-28 maximum stay, and camping is allowed only in designated sites (not in parking lots, boat ramps, or day-use areas).

The Setting & What You’ll Hear

You’re camping on the New River’s edge, which is the big draw—easy access for fishing and launching small craft. The tradeoff: trains across the river roll day and night, and you’ll likely hear rafting-related traffic during busy days. Weeknights and shoulder seasons tend to be the most peaceful.

Safety & River Sense

Swimming here is strongly discouraged. The New River has powerful currents, rocky shoals, and sudden drop-offs. Treat it with respect—wear a PFD if you’re hanging near the banks, especially with kids or pets. Bring your own water or a solid treatment system, and sturdy footwear for the beach—some campers report litter and glass in the sand.

Trails & Nearby

The Stone Cliff Trail begins right at the campground and follows the river—easy, scenic miles without moving the car. A short drive brings you to the ghost-town vibes of Thurmond for a dose of rail and coal history, and Dunloup Falls is a quick side trip if you’re chasing waterfalls.

Getting There

From US‑19, take the Glen Jean–Thurmond exit and follow WV‑25 toward Thurmond. Near the bridge over the New River, turn onto the gravel road and continue past the boat launch to the parking area. The access road is narrow and winding—go slow, and try not to arrive after dark.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the sweet spots: cooler temps, fewer bugs, and photogenic foliage. May often hits the balance of milder weather and lighter crowds. If you’re aiming for a beach site on a Thu–Sat, arrive early.

Who It’s For

Campers who value riverfront scenery and simplicity over amenities. If you need drive-in sites, hookups, or guaranteed tables, look elsewhere in the Gorge; if “primitive and free” makes your heart sing, this one’s a gem.
