Bunch Falls

Overview

Bunch Falls is a graceful, 60–75 foot cascade tumbling through the Quinault Rain Forest, and you don’t need to lace up boots to see it. It’s a true roadside stop on South Shore Road, where the rainforest practically swallows the pavement—ferns, moss, and big‑leaf maples frame the water beautifully.

What to Expect

• View it from the road or a short step-out to the shoulder—there’s no formal trail or platform.
• The waterfall drops in stages: a broad upper cascade and a narrower lower horsetail with more riffles below. In late spring and after rain, the flow is especially satisfying.
• Space is limited. You’re pulling into a small roadside turnout, taking a look, and moving on.

Why Go Here (and Why You Might Skip It)

If you’re driving the Quinault loop, this is a no‑effort, high‑reward pause—classic mossy rainforest vibes and an easy photo. It’s not the area’s most dramatic waterfall, and summer foliage can partially screen the view. Many visitors pair it with nearby Merriman Falls for a fuller waterfall fix.

Wildlife

This stretch of Quinault rainforest is rich with birds like Pacific wrens and varied thrush, and the broader corridor occasionally sees elk or black‑tailed deer. Roadside sightings are hit‑or‑miss, but keep your eyes open, especially at dawn and dusk.

Getting There & Road Notes

Bunch Falls sits along South Shore Road, just inside the park near Lake Quinault. Expect narrow sections and stretches of gravel/dirt. Drive slowly and use pullouts thoughtfully. At times parts of the loop can close; if that happens, you may need to park at a barricade and walk a short distance.

Photography

Best from the road with a wide lens to capture the tiers and the glowing green walls of moss. Overcast or post‑rain conditions make the colors pop. Rocks near the creek are extremely slick—admire, don’t scramble.

Best Time to Visit

• Season: Spring and after rains for the strongest flow; summer foliage can obscure parts of the view.
• Day of week: Weekdays see fewer cars vying for the small pullouts.
• Lighting: Morning or overcast skies for even light and richer greens.
• Hours: It’s a roadside stop; come early or late for solitude on the loop.
