Guide
Buttonwood is a 48-site campground on the southwest end of Bahia Honda State Park, on Bahia Honda Key. It takes everything from small tents to large RVs, but every site is on gravel. Sites have water and electricity, a picnic table and a grill; the campground also has a bathhouse with restrooms and hot showers, plus an RV dump station.
Sites 12 through 25 are waterfront. Sites 12 and 13 are beside the campers' marina, and site 14 is on the channel. Reservations open up to 11 months ahead, so book early if being by the water matters to you.
Gravel can make tent stakes hard to drive. Bring stakes suited to the surface and a way to get them in; campers also report that wind and biting insects can be a nuisance, though conditions vary.
Buttonwood makes a useful overnight base for the park's beaches, marina and paddling options. The concession elsewhere in the park sells sandwiches, snacks and ice. The Old Bahia Honda Bridge trail follows the former U.S. 1 approach to the bridge, a piece of the Keys' Flagler-era railroad story; from the top, the view takes in the whole island. A nearby walk is an easy way to make the stay about more than hookups and the campsite.
