Staff and volunteers can point you toward refuge sites, but don't expect the deer-viewing experience to happen at the center itself. Key deer roam the refuge lands and nearby community; the Fish and Wildlife Service says early morning and near sunset are the best times to look. Blue Hole is a separate stop a few miles north, with a short paved path to an observation platform. Pull fully off the road before watching wildlife.

National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the Key deer, the smallest subspecies of white-tailed deer and found only in the Lower Florida Keys. The refuge spans about 9,200 acres of pine rockland, tropical hardwood hammock, freshwater and salt marsh, and mangrove habitat.
