Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

After a drier spell the footing is markedly better, and the moss still holds its colour. Earlier in the day or outside peak weekend hours tends to give a calmer, more atmospheric visit and easier parking, though this is a well-known and highly rated spot and solitude is never guaranteed. On warm days the coolness inside is at its most striking.

Getting there

There is no drive-up viewpoint. Lud's Church is reached on foot, most commonly from Gradbach, from Back Forest, or as part of a longer walk taking in the Roaches, and it combines well with that ridge for a full day out. Wayfinding is not always obvious: signage is limited in places and phone signal can be unreliable, so carry a map or downloaded route rather than relying on live navigation. Nearby parking can fill up, so arriving earlier in the day helps.

More about Lud's Church

What it actually isDespite the name, this is not a building.

Despite the name, this is not a building. It is a natural chasm split into the gritstone of the Roaches by an ancient giant landslip, roughly 18 metres deep and around 100 metres long, with walls so thickly covered in moss that the light inside turns deep green. You walk in between near-vertical rock faces on rough stone underfoot, with trees closing overhead and only a narrow strip of sky above. The scale is intimate rather than vast, and the appeal is in the enclosure, the damp rock, and the sudden change in air.

The atmosphereThe contrast with the open moorland outside is the point.

The contrast with the open moorland outside is the point. The chasm holds cool, still air, which is why it is often cited as an example of Peak District tranquillity on a hot summer day. Visitors consistently single out the moss, the strange light, and the sense of stepping into somewhere quite separate from the surrounding hills. Historically the site is linked with fifteenth-century Lollard worship, which is where the church association comes from; the tales of Robin Hood, Friar Tuck and the devil's fingernails are local myths rather than record.

Footing and footwearThe ground is the main practical issue.

The ground is the main practical issue. The approach paths and the chasm floor are frequently muddy, slippery, steep or uneven, with wet rock and exposed roots. Sturdy, grippy footwear is genuinely useful, and this is best treated as a short but physical, weather-dependent detour where you should be prepared for rough ground. It is mapped as not wheelchair accessible, and while conditions on individual approach routes vary, no part of the visit should be assumed to be smooth or level.

The honest drawbackIt is small, and it is quick.

It is small, and it is quick. Some visitors expecting a dramatic cavern find the chasm shorter than imagined, and in busy periods a narrow passage with people passing in both directions undercuts the quiet. Treat it as one memorable, unusual element within a longer walk rather than a destination in itself, and go prepared for mud and rock rather than a casual stroll.
